Waitomo Axe & Gun Club!
In 2003 a group of people under the tutelage
of Rex Spencer and Blue Scott began to train as axemen.
The opportunity arose for the group to organise and run the Macdonalds Lime Centenary Chop as part of the Waitomo District Centenary Celebrations and so the Waitomo Caves Axeman's Club was formed.
In 2004 some members who were supporters rather than axemen themselves decided that while the axemen were training they would set up a trap and shoot a few clay targets. The activity proved popular and it was decided to change the name to The Waitomo Caves Axe & Gun Club.
The main chopping activities of the year were supporting the Otorohanga County Fair, and the Waitomo Caves Sports Day. The Otorohanga County Fair ceased in 2009 so to keep a meeting running in the district the club began to run their own chopping day in January. Other chopping meetings in the area are the Coast Sports at Marakopa and the Awaroa Sports at Hauturu.
The shooting activities are the annual pre-duckshooting season team shoot at Marakopa and the Christmas Shoot at Te Anga, run by the Kawhia Gun Club. Waitomo Axe & Gun Club now runs an annual shoot at Waitomo Caves on the Saturday before Labour Weekend in October.
